*Photo credit: ‘Fix Butch – Repair Femme’: Rhetoric, Derogatory and Violence

Even though Thailand is being perceived as the queer paradise of Asia, there are still many episodes of violence, especially towards the Lesbian, Bisequal and Trans men community. It is not only homophobic, but also gender based violence; this kind of brutality, on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, affects women and their everyday well -being.

A large number of toms (butches), dees (femmes) lesbians, bisexuals and trans men are subjected to physical and sexual violence because of prejudice as there is lack of understanding of homosexuality, bisexuality and transexuality in Thailand.

Read more about who toms and dees are.

A problematic use of derogatory phrases in the media, such as “Fix butch – repair femme” or “Turn butch into belle” are some of the examples that reflects the society’s insensitivity towards gender bias in relation to physical and sexual abuse. Furthermore, people involved in the work to prevent violence against women also lack non-bias information and knowledge concerning sexual orientation and gender identity. This inapt understanding and insensitivity renders toms (butches), dees (femmes), lesbians, bisexual and trans men to be particularly vulnerable to violence and discrimination.

On behalf of Sexuality Studies Association and Women’s Wellbeing and Gender Justice Program, together with 51 alliances* from civil society and non-governmental organizations network for women’s right, LGBT rights, sex education, reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and LBT+ communities, we would like to cordially invite you to attend the seminar and public forum on “Fix Butch – Repair Femme: Rhetoric, Derogatory and Violence” on Tuesday 28th June 2016, 13:00-17:00 at Boonchu Rojanastien Auditorium, 3rd Floor, Anaek-prasong1 Building, Thammasart University, Tha Prachan Campus.
